Ulster Contract Project Focus - December 2011 Ulster continues to provide first class products and service to clients around the world. Testament to this, Ulster's bespoke woven axminster carpets can now be viewed in the 5* Sofitel St James in London, the award winning Crystal Serenity Cruise Ship, the luxurious Ritz Carlton in Toronto and the elegant Amway Grand Plaza in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Property: Sofitel St James, London Designer: Russell Sage Studio Ideally located in the heart of London the Sofitel St James is a luxury 5 star hotel set in a beautifully preserved Grade II listed building. Reflecting its original grandeur the interior combines traditional British design with a contemporary style that is unmistakably French. Working in conjunction with the Russell Sage Studio London, Ulster designed and manufactured bespoke woven axminster for three areas within the hotel; St James Bar, The Balcon Restaurant and the intimate and unique private dining room which is tucked away on the lobby floor. St James Bar takes its inspiration from Coco Chanel’'s 1920’s Paris apartment and the tailored striped suits of Jermyn Street to create a cosy and relaxed atmosphere. The stunning highly textured floral rug which has been inset into jet-black wood uses a palette of 24 colours in hues of golds, citrus greens, rich browns and reds. Property: Ritz Carlton, Toronto Designer: Hirsch Bedner Associates The Ritz Carlton, Toronto is a luxury hotel and residential skyscraper located in the heart of downtown Toronto, Canada. At a height of 210 metres, it is Toronto's 8th tallest building and enjoys panoramic views out to Lake Ontario. Combining classic and contemporary architectural elements throughout, the bold carpet gracing the ballroom floor graphically represents the flora and fauna of Toronto’s coastline as well as the national emblem of Canada, a maple leaf. In total Ulster carpeted over 70002yds of public spaces and corridors to complement the contemporary aesthetic of the interior while incorporating reflections of Canada’s great outdoors. Property: Serenity Cruise Ship Designer: II by IV Design Associates One of Ulster’s most recent projects was with the award-winning Crystal Serenity Cruise Ship, which was first launched in July 2003. Following a $25 million redesign Crystal Serenity has emerged with a sophisticated look blending Hollywood Glamour and Fifth Avenue elegance. Working with Toronto based II by IV Design Associates, Ulster have produced a complementary array of designs for the guestrooms, suites, corridors and retail areas. “The corridors were a challenge,” explains Keith Rushbrook, Principle Designer of II By IV Design Associates. “These long spaces are not dissimilar to a succession of bowling alleys. We introduced drops at the entrance to every suite, breaking up the space, and did the same on a much larger scale for the elevators. Looking along the space one can clearly identify where these points are, acting as a very subtle form of signage. By not having borders on the carpet and allowing the pattern to grow from the outboard wall the corridors have also been made to feel a lot wider.” The corridors are made up of 3 distinct layers incorporating 23 tonal colours. The base layer provides a wave effect to create movement by colour blending from light to dark in vertical and horizontal directions. The middle layer is a geometric pattern influenced by the design in the guestrooms while the top layer is made up of botanical silhouettes. Property: Amway Grand Plaza, Grand Rapids, Michigan Designer: Gooch Design Studio The Amway Grand Plaza offers elegant old world charm set amid the sophistication of the modern day and has played a major role in the renaissance of downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. Using Concepts, Ulster’s interactive design archive system as a starting point Gooch Design Studio came up with a design which Ulster where able to manufacture with no repeat. With over 5,000 design options to choose from, ranging from small to large scale, geometric to floral, traditional to conceptual, Concepts is sure to provide the right design inspiration for every project.
