President's Letter

The Dog Days of Summer are almost behind us as well as half of a very exciting year for the NEWH Sunshine Chapter.

Our year started off with the most wonderful events that a Chapter could ask for – our 2^nd Regional Tradeshow on January 14^th with the NEWH Leadership Conference following immediately after.   We were very privileged to host this event and to have such inspiring industry leaders join us as guest speakers or panel member. A special thank you should also go to the NEWH Inc. staff and the other NEWH volunteers for putting together all of the amazing conference details.

In the months following the Leadership Conference, our chapter continued to host some terrific events. Not only have our monthly Sundowners been a huge success, we had a tour of the new Amway Arena which is the first NBA facility to earn LEED certification; a tour of the newly renovated Peabody Hotel; our annual Golf event (which we are so happy to announce that it did not rain and folks were actually able to play); a CEU event at the American Standard Showroom; and most recently, we had our forever popular Bowling Event where the cowboys and the cowgirls came out to play – what a fun time for all!

It may sound like we have already accomplished a lot in the first half of the 2011 year, but there is so much more in store for the chapter members.   An additional Sustainable Event scheduled in late August with host David Mahood, Owner of Olive Hospitality and Dee Dee Baggitt, Associate Director of Engineering at Rosen Hotels as our guest speakers. There will be one final Sustainable Event this year-a tour of an Orlando brewery.

This year our Chapter will be hosting our first Student Day which will focus on our area students to not only get them involved in NEWH but to introduce them to some of industry leaders during a forum that will consist of networking, guest speakers and question and answer sessions.

One of the highlight of this year will be our 15^th Anniversary Gala, which will truly be one of our best Scholarship events ever. Not only will our chapter celebrate a 15^th Anniversary but we will award our students with scholarships to help them pursue their futures in the Hospitality Industry. The year will end with our annual Toys for Tots Drive in December.

As everyone who is a part of NEWH knows, all these events take a lot of time and effort on every committee member’s part. I want to personally thank everyone that has been involved in each and every committee for their efforts.   We have such a great Board – thank you. May we all continue to thrive!

Dina M. Belon President Dina M. Belon is a Principal and an owner of RUSH Hospitality, a sustainable hospitality renovation company, providing Design, Pro curement and Construction services. Dina is a licensed Interior Designer in the state of Florida, and a LEED Accredited Professional. She is an active member of the US Green Building Council and sits on the Board of Adjustments and Appeals for the City of Titusville, Florida, where she lives; encouraging the local government to enact more ecologically friendly initiatives. Dina is also a member of the Space Coast Tourism Council Marketing Committee, where she encourages sustainable thinking within the tourism leaders in Brevard County. Additionally Dina is very involved in NEWH (The Hospitality Industry Network) as the director of the International Sustainable Hospitality Committee, which helps educate the hospitality community on sustainability. read more	Marissa J. Pam P. Niemann Fundraising	Lora M. Spran Sustainable Hospitality Lora graduated from Northern Illinois University with a BFA in Interior Architecture and minor in Art History. Following an inter nship at Walt Disney World, she made Orlando her permanent residence and has continued to work for Disney since 1992. For the past 8 years, Lora has worked as a Design Manager for Facility Asset Management, a team that oversees all the room renovations, suites, lobbies and public spaces for the World Disney World Resorts. In her position, Lora rewrote the FF&E specifications to reflect a more sustainable standard and has always strived to obtain a more “green” environment for their guests. Lora is a LEED AP and Florida Licensed Interior Designer. She is a mentor to the student interns within her department, and encourages higher standards in sustainability within all design. Lora has been a member of NEWH Sunshine Chapter for 8 years and on the executive committee for 4 years. She is currently in her second term as the Sustainable Director, where she oversees a committee of 7 that plan and coordinate sustainable events throughout the year. Recently she joined the NEWH National Sustainable Committee. Living sustainable is part of life that she infuses in both her work and personal environment. read more

The NEWH Sunshine Chapter hosted their monthly event at the Velvet Bar at the Hard Rock Hotel. It was also the Chapter's Annual Membership Drive.

January 4, 2012 – Sundowner

The NEWH Sunshine Chapter began the New Year having its monthly Sundowner Fiddler's Green Irish Bar in Winter Park.
